Note:-

As there is already more information on the web relating to GPS than one could absorb in a lifetime it is not intended to repeat information here but merely to provide hopefully useful links for the beginner.

Having recently purchased a GPS Unit  (Garmin c320) I was more than a little disappointed by the fact that the Point of interest menus (where you should be able to find the likes of Eating places, Service centers, accommodation and tourist attractions- either near your current location or on the Route you are traveling ) had nothing worth finding in Mount Gambier ( SA's largest Provincial City outside of Adelaide) in fact Adelaide fared no better!

The reason as I understand it is the fact that  MapSource uses Sensis to keep its maps updated. So you are not only expected to pay for mapsource map updates but also to have the information  users want to find, the providers have to pay sensis an annual fee to be included on the map (doesn't take much math to work out the Mega$ that would add up to) If that's not double dipping!!

To Garmin's credit they have figured that was going to mean most places we users want aren't going to get on the official Maps and have provided a POI Loader to allow us to share information we gather ourselves. Downside is that the information shows under Favorites and not under the main menu headings (hopefully they will wise up to that also in time)
